This is how the study works

Participation in the CO₂befreit study is simple, transparent and clearly structured. In just a few steps we guide you from registration to the personal final report.

Initial measurement

Before the study begins, your vehicle is checked free of charge at a partner workshop (emissions and consumption measurement). This gives us a clean starting value.

Card activation

Your personal fuel or charging card is activated. From this moment on, all transactions are recorded and can be included in your CO₂ balance.

Study phase (4 months)

You fuel or charge completely free of charge within the selected tariff. All consumption is automatically documented via the card.

Monthly report

Every month you receive a personal report: your consumption, CO₂ emissions and the amount compensated through our climate protection projects.

After four months, another measurement is carried out at the workshop. You receive a transparent comparison with the starting value as well as a final study report.

Frequently asked questionsabout the CO₂befreit study

The CO₂befreit study is a research project in which selected participants can fuel or charge for free for four months. All CO₂ emissions generated are 100% compensated through certified climate protection projects. The goal is to scientifically examine driving behavior, awareness of emissions and acceptance of compensation solutions.

All drivers of petrol, diesel or electric vehicles who are regularly on the road can participate. We are looking for as broad a mix as possible: commuters, frequent drivers, occasional drivers and also small business owners. The only requirement is willingness to take part in the free measurements and share your driving data transparently.

You can choose between two card types:

  • Fuel card for fossil fuels (petrol/diesel)
  • Charging card for electric vehicles

Both cards are available as Virtual or Physical versions, and are flexibly configurable (national/international, car wash, ACE).

  • Fuel card: large network of partner stations in Germany, optionally internationally.
  • Charging card: thousands of public charging points, optionally Europe-wide via roaming.
  • Also usable at service partners such as car washes or ACE.

Participation is free. You only pay a one-time activation fee (€3.99 virtual / €9.99 physical + deposit). All fuel or charging volumes within your selected tariff are completely free of charge.

Three tariffs for both card types:

  • Standard: 60 L or 60 kWh / month
  • Commuter: 150 L or 150 kWh / month
  • Frequent driver: 300 L or 300 kWh / month

Before and after the study, your vehicle is checked free of charge at a partner workshop (emissions & consumption analysis). The card documents all fueling or charging. From this we create your personal CO₂ balance, which is fully compensated.

All emissions are offset through verified projects:

  • Reforestation programs
  • Renewable energy (wind, solar, hydro)
  • Clean cookstoves in developing countries

We use exclusively Gold Standard and Verra certified projects — each verifiable by certificate number.

Your card stays active as a permanent benefit card with:

  • Exclusive discounts when fueling or charging
  • Additional packages (car wash, ACE, international)
  • Monthly CO₂ reports for your climate balance

From 2027, fuel prices will rise significantly due to the new EU emissions trading system (+10–20 cents/liter estimated). With CO₂befreit, you experience today how to save costs while driving sustainably — and secure exclusive benefits not yet available on the market.
